Hip Pain Q&A

What is hip pain?

Hip pain is a common pain complaint that includes any type of discomfort you feel in and around your hip joint. Your pain may develop from problems within the joint itself or from damage or injury to the soft tissue that supports the joint.

Though most cases of hip pain resolve on their own with at-home care, ongoing hip pain may affect your daily routine and benefit from a consultation with Dr. Puziss.

What are common causes of hip pain?

You may develop hip pain from an acute injury or an underlying disease. Common causes of hip pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Labral tear
  • Tendinitis
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Impingement
  • Piriformis syndrome (spasms and pain in the buttock muscle)
  • Gluteus tendinitis
  • Fractures
  • any abnormality of the neck, ankle, or foot
  • abnormal gape pattern

Your hip pain may also be due to problems related to your spine. Your hips and spine are interconnected and work together to support your body weight. Some conditions that cause lower back pain may cause discomfort that radiates into your hip, such as sciatica.

Problems with your hips can also cause problems in your spine, resulting in back pain.

What can I expect during a hip pain evaluation?

When you visit Puziss Orthopedics, for a hip pain evaluation, you can expect a thorough exam. Dr. Puziss takes a personalized approach to care and listens carefully to your concerns so he can develop the most effective treatment plan.

Dr. Puziss asks detailed questions about your hip pain, including the location of your pain and the type of discomfort you feel. He also asks about the onset of your symptoms and any activities you think may have caused the pain condition.

He performs a physical exam and closely observes your hips, testing their strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Dr. Puziss may request diagnostic tests, such as digital X-rays or MRIs, to confirm or rule out a cause of your hip pain.

How is hip pain treated?

Dr. Puziss develops a personalized treatment plan for your hip pain based on the root cause of your symptoms. He takes a conservative approach to care and uses many modalities to relieve your pain and prevent or delay surgical intervention.

Treatment for hip pain may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy
  • Joint injections
  • Bursa Injections
  • treatments of the knee, ankle, or foot that causes hip pain

Dr. Puziss also integrates complementary therapies into treatment for hip pain and may refer you to a chiropractor, acupuncturist, or naturopath.

If you fail to get relief from your hip pain with conservative medical care, Dr. Puziss refers you to one of the top-notch surgeons in the area for a consultation.
